Is Your Site Google Friendly?

Like them or not, Google dominates Internet search. The numbers tend to hover between 85 and 90 percent of searches on the web are done using Google. And why not? Google has been at it a long time, and their indexes and algorithms are unparalleled. They are the best in the game, but what does that have to do with your business?

The ComNaD Internet Marketing page leads off with a question which asks: "What good is it to build a website if no one can find it?" Perhaps it’s more appropriate to ask what good is a site if no new customers can find it. A website is a great place for people interested in your business to find out more about your products and/or services. It is a great to have a website to give as a referral if someone asks about your business. It is even a great place to do business if you sell products via your website. But one of the main reason most small businesses have a website is to find new customers.

Is your website generating new business? If not, perhaps it’s not optimized for Google. Google employs many of the top web developers in the world and many other employees to make the company run; however, none of those employees catalog websites, create indexes of web page content or rank websites for search results. That’s all done by the spider programs that Google designed to scour the web. Programs have limits. The spider programs read website code, and unlike a person, it is not usually able to reason out intentions of a programmer's poorly written code; rather, it reads the code as written. This can greatly impact Google’s ability to catalog and index your website, thus affecting your rankings in the organic search results. That could be costing your company business.

Another thing to consider is the impact of social media. Is your site optimized to be shared correctly on social media? Do you have the easy “share” links built into your site? When someone shares content from you site does it format correctly for Facebook? If you write a blog, are viewers able to share blog entries? It’s the small tweaks that can help your web site make a big impact.

Remember, you only have one chance to make a first impression. When a potential customer does find your website, make sure they have a positive experience so they are more apt to become new business!
